Central Coast rain doesn't arrive gently. We get long dry stretches and then a storm system that dumps a season's worth of water in a few days, usually with wind behind it. That pattern is hard on roofs, and the damage it causes rarely shows up as a dramatic hole. It shows up as small failures that leak slowly for months.
Start from the ground with your back to the house, and look along the roof line. A ridge that dips, a plane that looks wavy, or courses that no longer run parallel to the eave are all structural signals worth a professional look. Then scan the field of the roof for shingles that are lifted at the corners, curled, or missing entirely, and look at the valleys where two roof planes meet, since that's where the most water travels and where damage concentrates.
Check the gutters next, because they collect the evidence. A heavy layer of shingle granules in the downspout outlet means the surface of your shingles is wearing off, which is the beginning of the end for that roof. Gutters pulling away from the fascia, or overflowing during rain, tell you water is running down the wall instead of away from the house.
Then go into the attic on a bright day and turn the light off. Daylight coming through the sheathing means a hole. Dark stains or streaks running down the rafters mean water has been travelling, and here's the part most people get wrong: the stain is almost never under the leak. Water enters uphill, runs along a rafter or the underside of the deck, and drips wherever the path ends. That's exactly why chasing a ceiling stain from inside so often fails.
Finally, look at the penetrations from the ground with binoculars if you have them. Pipe boots crack from UV exposure long before anything else fails, chimney and skylight flashing lifts, and satellite dish mounts get installed straight through the shingles by people who never had to fix the result.
